According to Princeton University’s Word Net, a mentor is “a wise and trusted guide and advisor.” Those words certainly describe the man I am honored to have as my mentor, Donald Tang.
Born in China, and now a very proud American citizen, Donald is the embodiment of those ancient Confucian values--to always help others, to encourage education, and to seek to improve the world.
Donald’s support and inspiration has been with me from the earliest days of the Urban Entertainment Institute. At every step along the way, he has been there to provide wisdom and guidance. You would imagine that all of his time and attention is absorbed by the demands of being Vice Chairman of Bear, Stearns and Chairman of Asia Society Southern California. But he is always there for me–and for the kids of Los Angeles.
When the Urban Entertainment Institute was just beginning, Donald offered guidance on how to balance our mission with sound business practices. He helped me to understand the importance of having a sound administrative infrastructure and showed me how to develop an outstanding board of directors. There is no question I cannot ask him.
Arriving in America as a penniless and ‘English-less’ teenager, his own life stands as an example of power of the human spirit to overcome any obstacle in this land of opportunity.
Donald is a frequent speaker and panelist at international conferences, and he is sought out by business and political leaders for his unique insight and experience, especially as it relates to economic globalization between East and West.
Tirelessly devoted to improving the world around him, Donald serves on a number of important boards. His positions include: The Board of Trustees of California Institute of Technology, Trustee of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Member of the Advisory Board of RAND – Center for Asia Pacific Policy, and Chairman, Banking Reform Committee on China, and Member of the Committee of 100.
Unlocking the potential inside every young person–regardless of background or circumstance–is Donald’s lifelong commitment.
Donald Tang is my mentor. And he is my friend.
